When I was in French kindergarten we wore blue smocks and held our lunch baskets and stood at attention when the teacher came in. So the teacher comes in — I know his name to this day — looks at these five and six year olds, and says, “Gentlemen, it's you or I.” I knew then what the whole theory of teaching is about: “It's you or I.” Whenever I hear about these teaching colleges in America, I laugh sardonically because the art of teaching is simply to know what that sentence means.
